In general, GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) also known as acid reflux, is a malfunction of the digestive apparatus. Gastro esophageal reflux disease is the result of the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) – a muscle behaving as a valve to close off the esophagus from the stomach – not functioning correctly and allowing acid matter to flow back, or “reflux”, from the stomach up to the esophagus. It is the gastric/digestive pathophysiology that indicates the link between eating and GERD treatment of this medical problem.
Acid reflux symptoms can differ between different people. The typical signs of gastro esophageal reflux disease include regurgitation and heartburn, but can also be seen as pains in the chest, dry coughing, reactive respiration difficulties, painful swallowing, indigestion and a sensation of something lodged in your throat. Gastro esophageal reflux disease, known in layman’s terms as acid reflux or GERD, is a chronic, distressing and discomforting medical ailment negatively influencing one’s quality of life. Over time, ignoring GERD can mean degeneration into serious complications like ulcers and Barrett’s esophagus, as well as a cancer that starts off in glandular tissue, and that is called adenocarcinoma.
In research in 1997 as part of the Gastroenterology journal, Locke, Talley and Fett showed that acid reflux symptoms occur every week for up to 1 in 5 people. Further studies showed prevalence of 30% to 40% for the general public. This indicates that gastro esophageal reflux disease is a significant problem in developed western countries, especially in the US. About 3 out of 5 individuals have GERD symptoms once per month or even more.
Factors that contribute directly are: debilitation of the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) muscle where stomach juices then flow back from the digestive system to the esophagus bringing an excess of stomach acidity. Gastro esophageal reflux disease is a physiological conundrum with multifaceted etiology, meaning that it is the result of several factors, whether internal or external.
