RV Security

Files under Automotive | Leave a Comment

Many people don’t realize how important it is to install security devices on their RV or motor home. Think about it just for a second- which makes a better target for thieves, an older-model car, or an expensive-looking motor home stocked with electronics, jewelry, and other high-value possessions? For a criminal, the choice is easy. How can you protect your RV from the range of security threats that may befall it?

First, install door and window alarms on all access points to the RV. These alarms will let off a loud beep when they are opened without first disarming them. This will quickly alert you to anyone trying to break in.

Although many people keep their RV near their home, others opt to keep it in a storage facility when not in use. Always investigate the security offered by the facility. Are identities checked before people are allowed to enter the storage area? Are there security officers who routinely patrol the RV storage area? For the best security, look for secure storage surrounded by high fences and protected with security cameras, bright security lights, and a gate that is passcode-protected.

Negotiating a New Car Purchase Price

Files under Automotive | Leave a Comment

Every car has a market price – and then there is the price customers wind up paying. It doesn’t seem fair but quite often one customer pays a price that is far different than another customer. How does that happen? That customer is skilled in negotiation and knows the true value of the car. That may sound very simple but that’s the way car buying goes – no matter the fluctuation in the economy. When you want to buy a new car, you need to know exactly how to negotiate a new car purchase price to your advantage.

Begin by understanding the exact value of the car in terms of MSRP and invoice price. The MSRP is the manufacturers suggested retail price and it includes a nice profit margin for the dealership. The invoice price is what the dealership actually paid for the car. This is the number you want to target. Although most dealers do not publish their invoice price, as a general rule it is somewhere between 5 and 15 percent less than the MSRP.

There are plenty of websites out there that track new car invoice prices. Take the time to research the true value of the cars you are shopping. This can save you thousands of dollars if not tens of thousands of dollars. The car salespeople are fully aware of the car’s invoice price even though the sticker price is higher. The MSRP or sticker price is higher because they want to make money off of it. Knowing the difference between the two prices gives you a target to work with when negotiating your new car purchase price.

Snow Driving In Sweden

Files under Automotive | Leave a Comment

Think Scandinavian rally driver.

That’s what I was (or rather trying to be) for the three special days I spent up in snow country, Sweden. Tucked away in a small area of town called Arjeplog, the small community of inhabitants grow to almost double it’s size during the winter months when people from other parts of the world head over to occupy their winter homes and tourists like myself who attend driving courses by the various car brands (I had breakfast across the room from the gang from AMG).

So besides IKEA and Swedish meatballs, Sweden, especially when the mercury decides to plunge well below in the negative region, have been known to have one of the most ideal conditions for a special group of people – Car Testers. These individuals, mostly made up of engineers, come from all over the world with their specially analytically-equipped laptops to test their brand’s new models behaviour in such extreme weather conditions in Sweden.

So these guys knew their place in the equation and knew what they had to accomplish while on their trip. Me on the other hand, not so.

Why do I think that this bit of news is surprising? Its because a company like Subaru took so long to set up its business in a country that is practically its closest neighbour. An answer may be found in the statement below:

Ford Trims Down; Sells Volvo to Geely For $1.8 Billion

Files under Automotive | Leave a Comment

Ford Motors is all set to trim down with Volvo brand going to Chinese conglomerate for $1.8 billion. The deal marks the culmination of long standing negotiations between Ford and Geely Investment Holdings and brings to the fore the Chinese manufacturer in the global automotive industry.

Geely is China’s 12 th largest automotive maker and has expressed intent to continue producing Volvo in Sweden. It is also looking to achieve economies of scale by setting up a production facility for Volvo in China.

Since Ford took over Volvo for $6 billion in 1999, Ford has not been able to capitalize on Volvo’s strength as a brand. The fact that Ford had been looking for a buyer for long is also a testimony to the fact that Ford did not consider Volvo’s acquisition of benefit.

Basics of Your Vehicle’s Cooling System

Files under Automotive | Leave a Comment

Most drivers realize their car’s cooling system (CS) is responsible for regulating the temperature that surrounds their engine during operation. But the system’s job extends further. It is also tasked with helping the engine heat up quickly once it has been started. Here’s a quick overview of the reason:

Your engine should not run cold. If it does, the individual parts wear out more quickly than normal. The CS helps ensure the temperature around the engine rises almost immediately in order to prevent wear. During operation, your engine coverts fuel to propulsion energy. But there’s a significant portion that is expended wastefully through heat production. The main job of your car’s cooling system is to get rid of that heat before your engine overheats.

In this article, we’ll explore the CS in more detail. I’ll briefly explain the difference between liquid and air-based systems before describing the components that comprise the former (which is more prevalent in today’s vehicles).

5 Common Questions People Ask About Their Car’s Brakes

Files under Automotive | Leave a Comment

Most of us only think about our brakes when they make noise or fail. Otherwise, we expect them to work flawlessly whenever we press down on the pedal. When we do so, the force is amplified and transmitted from the master cylinder to the calipers and pads. The pads respond by squeezing down on the rotor and thus, bringing our vehicle to a stop.

There are several factors that can impair this process and it’s often difficult to identify the root cause from the symptoms. Sometimes, people hear a grinding noise or feel a pulsation when they press down on the brake pedal. Other times, the pedal feels spongy or drops to the floorboard. We’ll clarify some of the potential problems that can occur by addressing five of the most common questions people ask about their brakes.
