Emergency kits are an important addition to any car, but it is especially important to have one during the winter months. Being stranded on the side of the road is bad in the spring or fall, but it can be downright dangerous in the summer and winter months. Even if you have OnStar, AAA, or a diminutive mechanic who rides along on your road trips, it doesn’t hurt to keep an emergency kit with the essentials.
All Year Round
You always need jumper cables, road flares, a first aid kit, a flashlight (with extra batteries), some tools (pliers, wrench, screwdrivers), a tire pressure gauge, a help sign, pen or pencils with paper, and a pocket knife. Of course, you should keep a cell phone on you at all times (though you shouldn’t talk on it or text on it while driving), and it doesn’t hurt to keep a cell phone car charger on hand in the event yours goes low on power.

The air conditioners found in the car works similarly as like as the air conditioners present in the houses and offices. In simple words, the air conditioning system of a car is the small unit of window air conditioning system. With the passage of time, the air conditions found in the car have got changes, and now the latest models are available, which provide more and comfortable cooling.
In order to understand, how the car air conditioning system operates, it is required to know various parts of this unit. First of all, the most important component which is present in this system is the compressor. The compressor is the central component which emits hoses of both high and low pressures. When these hoses come out, they go inside the condenser and finally to the evaporator. In this system, there are two types of valves like expansion and dryer valves, which are required for the proper functioning of this system. The function of expansion valves is to regulate the internal temperature of air, and it controls the refrigerant flow inside the system. There are certain anti-freezing agents as well like coolant or condensed gases, which pass through these valves.
The mechanism of a car air conditioning system is quite different from the conventional air conditioners. The car system instead of making the air cool, take out the heat, which is already found in the air. The Freon gas is used in the car air conditioning system which possesses a high temperature. When this gas passes through the compressor, the pressure channels mix it with the fresh air. The total gas mixture due to compression becomes liquid, and then it comes to the dryer. This chamber purifies the gas and sends to the evaporator through an expansion valve. The liquid gas absorbs the heat of the car which is then evaporated from here by the help of a blower or fan. This phenomenon repeats several times in order to make the environment cooler.

Your car seems to pull to one side of the road or another while driving down the street or road. Your trusted mechanic or dealership service tech adviser “advises’ you that you may need a “front end wheel alignment”. Other than extracting precious cash from your wallet or bank debit or charge card what is a front and wheel alignment? As well what do the words, phrases and measurements that the mechanic or the mechanics helper explains detail to you mean – well at least of terms of your vehicle’s drivability and tire care and maintenance?
Wheel (sometimes referred to as tire) alignment or alignments generally refers to all of the angular relationships between the front suspension and steering components and your integrated car body, or in older automobiles “the frame”. Overall it can be said that five angles are manipulated by automotive designers and engineers to reach a balancing act and indeed a compromise between optimal tire life and lifetimes , gasoline fuel economy and in the end your road handling and driving safety. As a maxim it can be said that best overall fuel economy and tire life are achieved if the tires are perfectly upright as well as being in parallel stance to the overall direction of travel. However a car, Sports Utility Vehicle SUV or truck steers and handles better if its tires run at a slight angle. This does cause them to scuff along the pavement a bit as they roll, which does work to reduce tire life and fuel economy. Thus it can be said proper tire alignment to begin with is one big balancing trick.
“Camber” is the inward or outward tilt of the wheel, measured in degrees between the tire centerline and the vertical. To simplify the term “camber” to the average automobile owner simply put if the wheel tilts outward then camber is said to be “positive”; if it tilts inwards then the camber is “negative”.

Slip sliding away. That is what most automobile drivers would be doing if it were not for their vehicle’s steering and steering mechanisms. Yet few drivers and motorists comprehend or have the slightest inclination of how their car is pointed or steered down the roadway predictably, safely and at a good clip of speed. Steering systems were created to allow 100 lb (45 kg) people to control 4,000 lb (1800 kilogram) vehicles quickly, accurately and without undue strenuous effort and efforts. This is all accomplished via a series of components that lead from the steering wheel to the front wheels of your car or truck.
Because the steering wheel is essentially a small lever (the radius of the average steering wheel is only 7 inches in length), the driver needs what is referred to in the science of physics as “mechanical advantage” to overcome the inertia of the car’s weight and the friction between the tires and the roadway. This advantage is provided by the “steering ratio” – that is the number of 360 degree turns of the steering wheel that are required to swivel the front wheels from lock to lock (all the way from left to right – usually 60 degrees) In this specific detailed case the steering ratio is therefore 900:60 translated down to 15:1 for ease of description and explanation. Overall in mechanical terms a ratio at the low end of the scale allow to a driver or motorist to respond more quickly to the wheel in an emergency type situation , but generally such a safety maneuver requires more overall power to the steering wheel in the car or truck cab operate than a higher ratio will do.
The basic makeup and setup of the steering system is that what is called the “steering shaft” runs inside a tube like steering column setup, through the metal protective “fire wall”, which provides a safety barrier between your engine compartment and the passenger areas, straight into the steering gearbox which lies inside the engine compartment. Unlike older pre safety concern auto models, modern steering shaft are designed to collapse on impact to protect the driver from impalement on the steering wheel which auto safety engineers will point out was not uncommon years ago before modern auto safety standards were implemented by major auto manufactures.

One of the great challenges for any courier is securing that signature from the client – the one that confirms that you’ve done your bit. In other words, the consignment (or parcel, letter etc) has been delivered and it’s now somebody else’s worry. It sounds so easy and perhaps, for a lot of the time, it is. However, life and its vagaries (i.e. the client) don’t always seem to have been informed of the plot in advance.
Entry to the inner sanctum
A good example of this is something the courier may see when delivering to the large factory, industrial complex or even some large office buildings. Arriving at the notional address (the use of ‘notional’ is pretty key here) you suddenly realise that the address really encompasses an area about the size of Wales and has at least 964 gates or other forms of entrance. It’s always good fun when, having been unceremoniously kicked out of the first one you tried at random, you have to decide whether to start checking out the other entrances clockwise or anti-clockwise. It must be one of those ‘challenges and opportunities” the courier boss promised you in your recent career review. Yes, one would think that any of the gates or doors would have someone available that could make a few internal phone calls to find where exactly you’re supposed to go to deliver, but that can be a bit of a ‘jobsworth’ challenge for some of the parties concerned. “I’m not allowed to deal with deliveries in any way”; “This phone’s not working”; “I’m on my break”; “I’ve never heard of him/her”. These are just some of the gems the poor courier may encounter.

People often talk about the eating habits of many species of the world but those of the courier are less widely discussed. That’s not entirely fair because they, in fact, have feeding practices that are unique to their species.

Of course, not all members of the species are the same. There’s a great feeding divide between those that work in city-centre courier businesses (typically motorcycles, bicycles, scooters and some vans), and the rural variety of courier that typically travels great distances in the day (vans, some bikers, large trucks
and wagons etc).
Those that work in and around the great metropolitan centres are theoretically
great connoisseurs of city centre cuisines, but in practice, they usually divide down into two sub-species in culinary terms: the Street-creders and the minimalists. The street-creders are those that always know where that great back-street deli or sandwich shop is. They can sniff out that new take-away that’s offering the great deal on hummus or special bottled water from Croatia from a mile away. These are quite often closet health food types (though they may not admit it) and they’ll be prepared to cycle or ride a long way out of their way to get the more unusual treats – such as Hungarian goulash in sachets or those genuine made-in-Spain and frozen-in-France ‘Thai’ fishcakes. Some are slightly ashamed of their practices and may simply say “just off for a pie” when, in reality, they’re just sneaking off for a furtive Tibetan salad. Some serious students of courier cuisine and eating habits maintain that there’s a correlation between the use of Spandex shorts and sunglasses and this type of behaviour. This is unproven and remains controversial.

Road users often have a choice of taking a major road route – a motorway or dual carriageway A road for instance – or a minor route to their destination, one that takes in B and C roads and, for those with knowledge of the region, which may mean time saving. The choice is one we all make as there are usually more than a couple of ways of getting from A to B, but the question is this: statistically, which are safer – major roads, or less populated minor road routes?
Logic says that the choice of a motorway – statistically the safest way to travel on UK roads – is the safest option, but not everybody has the option of using such on their daily commute or school run. This makes it important to consider the numbers of accidents on B and C roads in relation to those on major roads.
Staring with a basic figure that gives us a benchmark, the Office for National Statistics has compiled information relating to the average number of accidents on the roads each year. The total for Great Britain is around 220,000 per year, this being individual accidents and not casualties. Given that the figures show around 110,000 of those occur on designated major roads we are left with a very neat 50-50 split between the major routes and the minor.
