English Football

Files under Sports | Leave a Comment

In 1863 the first set of rules for association football were established. Those rules were the influence for the Laws of the Game. Football is a National sport in England. England has more than 40,000 football clubs and millions and million of spectators at those games every season. England has close to 100 professional football clubs, the Football League, which is the oldest national league, the Football Association, which is the oldest governing body, and the most popular league in all of the worlds leagues the Premier League which is known as “the World’s greatest show”

From back in medieval times football has been played in England. The first world football club was a team known as the Gymnastic Society of London which was developed in the eighteenth century. In the year 1848 the first rules were drawn up at Cambridge University and they were called the Cambridge rules. Many codes were developed with these rules which included association football.

England’s top football clubs decided to break away from the Football League, which formed the Premier League in 1992. The Premier League sits at the top of the English football pyramid with promotion to and from it with the Championship. Currently the league consists of 20 teams, each facing each other twice a season (home and away matches) The top four placed teams at the end of the season earn qualification to the UEFA (Europe) Champions League, a competition with significant financial benefits, the next highest placed team qualify to the less glamorous Europa League. The three teams that finish at the bottom end of the League over the course of a season face relegation to the football championship league.

Factors to Take Into Consideration When You Want to Buy Tickets Online

Files under Sports | Leave a Comment

When you want to attend an event or a concert, you should consider the option to buy tickets online. This is not only convenient, but it can be done in a matter of minutes. This will save you a lot of time and hassles that would have been spent waiting in line.

Some of the advantages of making purchases over the internet is the fact that one can get extra details about the seats that they want to opt for. This is because some sites provide clients with the option of internet tools which they can use to pick the seats. This includes giving one a perspective of how the stage would look like from the selected seat.

In addition, one has the advantage of perusing the site to check out whether there are other upcoming events in the town. This will keep you updated about any other related events that may come up and even book the events well in advance.

Keith Smart Leads Golden State to NBA Relevance

Files under Sports | Leave a Comment

Golden State Warriors head coach Keith Smart is still probably best known for the shot that won the 1987 NCAA basketball championship for Indiana. Now, though, he is rapidly making a name for himself by leading the Golden State Warriors to respectability and perhaps even a Western Conference playoff berth this season.

The Warriors are currently 7-7 and trail only the Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division. The team is on track for its first playoff berth since 2007, and the head coaching change from Don Nelson, 70, to Keith Smart, 46, is the primary difference.

Nelson seemed to hang around last year just to set the NBA record for career wins as a head coach. He left coaching the defense to Smart and often seemed disengaged during timeouts and post-game media conferences. Before this season began the Warriors paid off the last year of his contract for $6.5 million and sent him off to his hammock on Maui. Nelson’s last three NBA stops (the Knicks, Dallas, and Golden State) all ended poorly. It is doubtful that he will coach again in the NBA.

Triathlon Training: Recommended Reading – Book Review by Tri Coach Richard Laidlow

Files under Sports | Leave a Comment

We have just read the new book “Run” by Matt Fitzgerald (a regular writer on both Triathlon and Run related subjects). It is a very well written and informative book, which offers a refreshing “mind body” perspective on running.

Based on recent neurological research he advocates that runners should learn to listen to themselves and run more on feel than by anything else. He suggests that in doing so you will inevitably increase your enjoyment of running and therefore run more, with less injuries. This almost by default will make you go quicker.

This is a book which focuses on experienced athletes rather than those new to the sport, but whoever you are and whatever level you are currently at, it is a book that makes for interesting and thought provoking reading for both triathletes and runners alike.

Tai Chi Qigong

Files under Sports | Leave a Comment

Sometimes in Tai Chi classes, students are taught Qigong as a series of moves different from the regular set. The student learns the regular moves and then learns a different set of moves that are called Qigong as if the new set of moves were the whole of Qigong. Although all the moves used can be valuable, this is not true Tai Chi Qigong practice.

Qigong translates into English as “energy work.” The energy referred to here is not only kenetic energy. It also deals with the biological energy that moves through the body. Real Qigong is not a separate set of moves. Qigong can be practiced using the same moves as Tai Chi. True Qigong practice has to do with moving energy through the body. Without some instruction in Qigong the moves practiced are little more than choreography. Tai Chi without Qigong practice does have health benefits. But they are the same benefits that could be gained from regularly practicing slow and deliberate ballroom dancing.

So if Tai Chi Qigong is not simply a separate set of moves, what makes it unique? How does one practice it? To begin with, students must practice their forms in a way that will not impede the flow of energy through the body. With proper structural alignment, the basic moves in the regular set will automatically begin the circulation of energy through the body without the student having to focus on making that circulation happen. Without proper posture and alignment, there will be blockages in the energy flow of the body and this circulation of energy will not happen.

The Basketball Game

Files under Sports | Leave a Comment

My buddy, James, has always been a big kidder. I’ve known him since we were in grade school, so now that we’re in our forties, you’d think I could read him like a book. And you’d think wrong.

James is the king. He just has this face that looks so honest, it’s impossible not to believe every word he says. Even when my better judgment tells me that he’s lying, I can’t bring myself to accept that. “Really?” I say over and over. Sometimes I even go further and insist, “You’re not serious. I know you’re not serious, man. Just give it up.” But behind that fa?ade of certainty, I have doubts. Big-time doubts. I might be making a moron out of myself-is he really telling the truth this time?

I’ve done the fake-out here and there, of course, with some success. I’ve seen my other buddy, Dave, try to fake James out before. But it’s not really Dave’s area of expertise, if you know what I mean. He doesn’t know where to draw the line. I saw him try to make James believe that it was 2008 instead of 2007. That kind of thing just doesn’t fly unless you’re really, really good, or dealing with somebody really gullible. And forgetful. I’ll never forget James’ classic line from that incident: “Do you think I don’t know when I gotta vote, man? You’re an idiot.”

I do have one good story, though. I’m taking James to a Knicks game. Should be a really good game, and we’re both stoked. We’ve got great seats and a long weekend ahead of us. It’s Friday night, and since we have to drive directly to the game from work, I’m in my work clothes, including my basketball cufflinks. They look pretty decent with the suit, kind of add some panache. When we get to the arena, James notices them.
